Be awarre that the average civilization lasts 250 - 300 years. That is the case among the 20+ civilizations known to mankind. In short, a long study will be a foolish only due to time constraints. Waking up, just before you're about to go off the cliff, does not avail one of endless time to study.

So, 60 years ago (+/-) a report pointing up economic and social efficiencies moved to shut down community schools and centralize education, so that kids would have access to a range of teachers not availed in the small, community based school. But mankind, being mankind, system survival soon governed the common life of the system and the mission was scrapped. And, no longer did communities (neighborhoods) know their local school teachers and principals. They no longer had access to their student's education. Education was separated from the family unit. HUGELY negative outcomes. One size fits all became the mantra. If you have more than one child in your home you know this does not work.

So, now, in our major School districts easily 30% of the employees are bureaucrats that have a comfortable niche in which to hide and simply spend their time thinking of things for teachers to do. By the way, if this was done massive amounts of money would be available to raise the salaries of those teaching in the classrooms. Teachers get paid much better!!!!! And the pressure is removed from Legislatures to raise teacher pay, only to see large percentages of it disappear into bureaucrat salaries.

Eliminate the unions, just like President Reagan eliminated the Air Traffic Controllers Union when it got in the way of public safety. The teachers have a union they have ignored, it is the local school PTA.

Teach classically which works with brain development (it does not ignore brain development). Accordingly you have much improved outcomes. In a classical curriculum students read the original material, not the CLIFF notes, and they read entire books, not internet generated summaries. This all builds brain power.

The best of schools are already doing this. They are found among the charter and private schools that are true to the classical heritage. Probably 5% - 10% of the private and charter schools are classical, and they are improving outcomes regularly.

The best of schools do not have to worry about a certain percentage of their faculty being certified. It is the certified teachers that have produced the abysmal outcomes that need rectification. So, make the Pincipals once again, to use an analogy, the captain of their ships, and let them instruct Subject Matter Experts on classroom managment. Since they would have more income to pay better wages (by eliminating buraucracy) they could hire subject matter experts that have the love of learning and the ability to garner the respect of students. Then the Principal teaches them classroom management.

Prinicipals would quickly learn that they want a subject matter expert that is also themselves a "learner." Learners are the best teachers.

Many beneficial outcomes result from this, and we then are massively moving in the right direction. This can be done while studies are still going on.

Excellent lessons both days. In the second case, you led the witness away from the relevant observation. I watched the video and said to myself I don't care who wins because I would have to watch the rest of the movie to find out who was the villain and who was the hero, so I didn't respond with a vote either way. I didn't pick up on the fact that that fast-moving fight scene was generated by AI, although I did think that I couldn't have stood up to some of those punches even when I was in fighting form when I was trained in martial arts at the Royal Military College of Canada!

Patrick: TY for those good observations. One of my points is that we are going to have to be on almost constant alert, with Critical Thinking skills...

Dr. Droz,

I am fully ashamed in myself for for totally falling for the AI video you circulated. Thanks for correcting my gullibility. It was a well learned lesson for me about AI, thanks to you. Victor Davis Hanson has also complained about AI programs of him. I picked up on those as the pattern of his speech was odd, and he had already put people on notice of the false programming. AI is a serious problem by anonymous devious producers who want to create false impressions in the public.

Paul: Nothing to be ashamed of. My message is that we have to now be on high alert, and to have our Critical Thinking skills sharpened.

Thanks John,

I'm a little off topic, but I found this interesting. One of the people on your list

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltbie_Davenport_Babcock

has exactly the same heritage as me. There is a city in Rhode Island (Westerly) that was founded by a descendent of the original James Babcock, and there is a museum there (Babcock Smith House) where another famous Babcock (Joshua) originally lived. He was best friends with Benjamin Franklin in the period of the American Revolution in 1776. While serving as a Major General in the war, he also hosted George Washington in this same house.

You might be familiar with Westerly. If not, I recommend a visit. What a nice place. When we visited there several years ago and toured the museum, we were treated like royalty ........... the Canadian Babcocks, as they referred to us.

My apologies for being so far off topic, but I just had to tell you. As you know, I read and enjoy your posts regularly.

Russ: Not a problem. TY for the interesting info.

Don't believe anything you see online and only half what you see in real life.

I can only imagine how the "real life" actors and actresses are going to feel about being replaced by AI.

John Droz's avatar

NN: To get a flavor of Hollywood's reactions, read the two links I have about that.

Nadia Nichols's avatar

Holy boyz, things are getting interesting for sure in Hollywood. AI has also delved into the publishing industry, using copyrighted material. I just got notice that three of my books are part of the lawsuit, and it's a huge lawsuit.

John Droz's avatar

NN: The effect of AI will be astounding...

A good example, thanks. We need to watch out for AI when the antichrist appears pretending to be Christ and performs the apparent miracles of which we are warned in the Bible.

Leserly: TY for bringing up that legitimate concern.
