As the saying goes: “I’m not a doctor and I don’t even play one on TV.”
That said, I am a scientist, and medicine is a field of science. Further, I’ve always had a strong interest in many health-related subjects (e.g., COVID — see here).
I’ve seen and worked with people who have had a wide range of physical ailments. I’ve also seen many of these pass away. For example, when we first bought a home in coastal North Carolina, I had a varied collection of interesting men that I played golf with. Now, about three-quarters of them are deceased. Wow, that’s a lot!
What I believe is the worst disease you can get is probably not what you are expecting. As a senior, my conclusion is that the disease of negativity is extremely problematic.
Why do I say that? Well, here are some reasons:
1 - A negative person is an unhappy person. It’s about as bad as it can get to live an unhappy life — especially through your own doing!
2 - Their friends will be severely limited, as no one likes to be around a negative, unhappy, complaining person. Having few real friends is a major liability.
3 - Negative people have a poor self-image, which results in self-fulfilling failures. Expecting failure means that in many cases they don’t even try.
4 - Negative people are rarely productive people. One reason is that they tend to give up easily when the going gets tough.
5 - We all have internal talk. Negative people have self-defeating self-talk which reduces confidence, diminishes performance, and sabotages their success.
6 - Negative people draw poor conclusions from prior experiences (generalization). This often results in failure, again becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.
7 - A negative individual doesn’t even enjoy their successes. They write them off as an aberration, or luck — not something they worked for and deserve.
8 - Negativity will make you physically sick in multiple ways. Carefully absorb this: "Negative thoughts and emotions have widespread effects on bodily processes, like Metabolism, Hormone release, and Immune function."
This interesting article spells out 23 Signs of a Negative Person. A few of these are a bit sketchy, but most of them are good.
So what is the cure?
The simple, one-word answer is perspective.
The phenomenal power of perspective is hard to overstate. Watch this short video for an example. Would you trade your life and its many challenges for this person’s?
Perspective is an extraordinarily important life skill that is useful to EVERYONE, so it needs to be learned and nurtured. How do we accomplish that?
Some good commentaries about doing that are: The Power of Perspective, The Power Of Perspective (And How It Affects Your Life And Business), Developing the Power of Perspective, and The Power of Perspective – 9 Steps to Harness it.

PS — There are those who say that in our current societal situation we have good reason to be negative. Yes, there are some really bad things going on. That said: a) the country has endured many other horrifically bad times [e.g., the Civil War], and b) being negative does absolutely nothing to improve things, or to make you feel better.

The negatives come pell mell from the media outlets which are the voice of the government. A culture of despsir and die is plsyed endlessly. Reconnect to God and you wont be affected in tbe war to depress us all
If The Little Engine that Could had even an ounce of negativity, would it have succeeded? The power of positive thinking is very enabling. Negativity is self destructive. I believe we have both inside of us, we need to feed our positivity and starve our negativity.
