Critically Thinking: Big Bang or God?
Which answer makes more scientific sense — or is it both?
It started simply enough: the Texas State Board of Education took a refreshing stand against the Left indoctrination in our K-12 Science textbooks (see here).
A scientist I know (who is sympathetic to fixing textbooks), wrote a cautionary email:
I agree that this is a victory of sorts. But note that it was part of an effort to insert Creationism into school textbooks. That is a clear step backward because our efforts become linked to religious efforts, not scientific ones.
Creationism is fine. It is just NOT science.
Our efforts should be understood as 100% science and 0% religion. Similarly, we are 100% non-partisan, even though our efforts coincide with those who are religious and conservative.
Our opponents continually try to connect us to right-wing political and religious groups. This gives them yet another opportunity to do so. Similarly, our friends want to draw us into their religious and political activities. We must make it clear that we are not a party to those even if individually we certainly have religious and political opinions.
I wrote back:
Maybe I misunderstood the situation, but it seems to me that the Texas Board of Education is doing what is consistent with Critical Thinking and Science.
To be open to Creationism is not a religious effort, but rather an effort to consider possible alternatives to the Big Bang hypothesis plus the evolution hypothesis.
Since neither the Big Bang hypothesis nor the evolution hypothesis are scientifically proven, students should be open to alternative explanations.
To say that K-12 schools should only teach the Big Bang hypothesis or the evolution hypothesis, is as wrong as them only teaching the climate change hypothesis.
IMO our education system should acknowledge to students that:
1 - there are many things that Science does not currently know for a fact, and
2 - that means there are multiple options that we should be open to considering.
The end result is that students should do research plus Critical Thinking, and then come to their own conclusions.
This is exactly what we want them to do regarding climate change, so why should it differ elsewhere?
Another scientist friend then chimed in, disagreeing with me, saying:
I would respectfully take issue with your argument. The Scientific Method, as you have so often argued, is the testing of hypotheses against empirical evidence.
Students should always be open to alternative hypotheses, but only those which can be subjected to empirical testing.
The problem with Creationism is that it is not falsifiable and cannot be tested empirically. As a result, it is not a scientific hypothesis.
Creationists often point to issues and discrepancies in both evolution and the Big Bang theory, but issues with one hypothesis do not represent evidence for a specific alternative hypothesis.
In my humble opinion, Creationism belongs in Sunday school and not in science class.
My response to that was:

I never said Creationism was scientifically proven. I said that it is an alternative possibility, every bit as worthy of consideration as the Big Bang hypothesis is.
Not everything in life has a scientific explanation.
Furthermore, the Big Bang hypothesis is not subject to falsification, so by that standard, schools should not be teaching that either…
No further response from either scientist…
If we want to look at this scientifically, here is a scientific question that I pose: Are humans the most advanced beings in the universe?
The answer can not be YES, as that would make no sense. We do not understand even 1% of our existence. For example, multiple forces exist at the atomic level. Where did they all come from? Basically, we are left with two answers:
1 - Chance. That’s essentially the conclusion from the Big Bang hypothesis: everything we have today just coincidentally worked out. The statistical likelihood of that happening is one chance in a trillion quadrillion.
2 - A Higher Being.
If the answer is NO, then keep repeating that question to whatever beings are identified as being more advanced. At some point, you’ll come to “God.”
BTW, for those who want to avoid “religion” and strictly stick to “Science,” then check out what the Big Bang hypothesis actually is (e.g., see here):
“At the earliest moments of the Big Bang, all of the matter, energy, and space was compressed into an area of zero volume and infinite density. Cosmologists call this a singularity.” What is a “singularity”? See here: “It is a place in the universe where our laws of physics simply break down.”
In other words, it’s ludicrous to call the Big Bang hypothesis a “Science” explanation, as it is defined as a state where the laws of physics don’t work!
As a physicist, it is a thousand times more sensical that the universe was started by a much Higher Power Being, as opposed to the Big Bang hypothesis, as the later is premised on numerous unexplainable and scientifically irrational assumptions.
In other words, when our schools tell students that Creationism should be considered as an explanation of the origins of the universe, that is based on Science, not religion.

PPS — A scientist friend wrote me that it is not necessarily an either/ or question — as reality could be God and the Big Bang.
Yes, God + the Big Bang is a plausible hypothesis. That said, once we inject God into the equation, innumerable other possibilities (like creationism) are also plausible hypotheses. We (especially scientists) would like to have "everything make sense". Of course the singularity part does not make scientific sense — but ignore the man behind the curtain!

While reviewing Emails I missed earlier, I came across this message from you last November. I would surely have responded to it at the time, except that my best friend since high school was dying in a hospital in Pennsylvania at exactly that time.
I think it is very regrettable that so many theological matters are cast into a "either/or" confrontation, when "both/and" answers are often more illuminating. The Catholic Theologian John F. (Jack) Haught of Georgetown Univ. has written over a dozen books where he promotes the value of "both/and" thinking.
I wrote a book (published end of 2021) entitled "Everywhen: God, Symmetry and Time. " Therein, I presented a number of new ways of looking at things, all with the intent of convincing believers that they need not be intimidated by the sneering dismissal of atheists who think they know it all. I counsel an extra dose of humility before God, to warn scientists against thinking they have all the answers. In particular, I drew attention to the Divine property of Omnipresence. To most folks, that means "God is Everywhere," but I took note of the fact that St. Augustine (ca. 400 AD) taught that God created both space and time together, and THAT was "the beginning"; and so I stressed that God is present to all time as well as to all space. For this unusual characteristic of God I coined the neologism 'Everywhen". It boggles the human mind, because we can only think of time as linear and one-directional -- but that's our problem, not God's. In fact, there are a LOT of differences between God's comprehension and mankind's limited imagination. Among other things, I noted that at the initial creation of space and time (the Big Bang), God created certain symmetry principles which gave us the laws of physics; and so His creation was far more elegant than we humans perceive, with our limited minds wanting a linear sequence of events. In subsequent chapters, I discuss the idea that evolution is actually God's means of creation, and I find that to be the explanation for why there is something instead of nothing.

In the middle of this piece, the author says that "the Big Bang hypothesis ... is premised on numerous unexplainable and scientifically irrational assumptions." But so is everything else. So, we see that persons use "religion" and this is found everywhere. The human race universally relied upon myth for most of history until very recently. But, when they found out that each tribe's myths were different, it was decided by many persons in the modern world that a better option is science. Why? Because the results are (mostly) consistent across cultures. Science can accomplish a lot; but, there are things we do not know. What does one do when one sees that there are these things that seem to be outside of science? The science that we know is limited. When we refuse to admit to this, we find out that myth and science are actually very similar because science is becoming just another myth! Yes. I really think this is the case. These two have tangible similarities. They are not as different as we had supposed that they were. So, today there is the case where: "Science got stuck."
We could look at myth, religion, and science as all of them being parts of our human "ways of knowing." Part of our creative urge to know. I have also written a little about "myth vs. science," which can be found by searching through my newsletter, going back a few months in two or three pieces of writing and and also other bits and pieces. Everyone needs to admit that science just does not -so far -know everything. We could end up being still very much in a world of myths. And believe it: Science is the new myth. So, the really deluded manner in which some persons think that science knows all, and is the only way to know, serves as the excuse for some really bad, and highly limited, "science" (if we call it that). Another example is when they just say "trust the science," which is just like primitive tribes because primitive tribes just trust the myths they believe in. But the myths are rather innocent and charming. When science becomes the new myth science loses its way; it does not fulfill its potential, and at that time there is a danger that is not solved by what passes for science. Something that we are calling "science" has now become a danger. And much worse it is, than myth or religion are, since those are subject to long cultural validation.
My final thought: Science should be a way of knowing; not a way of not knowing.
