I think the NCAA is going to need to step in somehow and keep football teams together through the bowl season. The patrons of the Orange Bowl were defrauded by the fact the team that went 12-0 was decimated by portal transfers. The debacle won't be soon forgotten by bowl organizers and big money paying title sponsors, to say nothing of the fans who came expecting to see a legitimate contest.
As usual, common sense from John. Though many parents, like lemmings, continue to send their progeny off for what they think is a college education, smart parents today see what is happening on college campuses and are eschewing the traditional college path. Unlike the athletes, many kids graduate with useless majors and a mountain of debt. That they want to skip out on that responsibility should surprise no one. And need we discuss plagiarist Claudine Gay of Harvard?
The separation of church and state is fundamental to our constitution for a good reason. The separation of sports and higher education should be no different. Almost all other countries do not combine the two. Those with athletic abilities, aptitude and ambition have other avenues they can pursue. When more money and attention is spent on sports activities than educational ones, “The tail is waging the dog!”.
You nailed it on several connected topics regarding problems with higher education, but I particularly agree that most colleges (and medical schools) completely failed with covid. There was nothing scientific about mandating vaccines, masks, lockdowns, and distance learning for this generally young and low risk population (or any population actually). The one thing we should expect from higher education is to teach students how to think, yet critical thinking was thrown out the window. Academic medicine, and higher education in general, was exposed as frauds for their allegiance to money, woke ideology, and group think. Great essay.
Thomas: Thank you. The "higher education" response to the COVID-19 matter is a generally unreported disaster. As I briefly wrote above, these institutions had all the ingredients necessary to know what Science did and did not say about COVID-19. Yet they chose to abandon Science and instead follow the politically correct path. The likely reason for this is that they didn't want to jeopardize any money coming to the school via the government. So students were the sacrificial lambs for their cowardliness.
Thanks. The portal debacle is a mystery to me! I remember the day when college was primarily focused on academic excellence. I can remember the day when college sports and the Olympics was for amateurs ONLY! Yes, I am a fossil. Fortunately we have two grandsons, college graduates, that concentrated 100% on their chosen fields, chemical engineering and architecture. Neither played sports or had an interest in college sports!
Did I play college ball? Yes. Did I participate in various sports throughout my life? Yes. However we never considered sports a high priority i.e. watching or paying to watch sports.
I totally agree with you John! Watching the few bowl games was such a disappointment with the team not being complete. "They" destroyed NASCAR with changes/regulations/ political correctness, women's sports in general and college football. I can't understand how these guys have no loyalty to their team mates. They took a scholarship, it should be considered a contract! Money talks
The most important personal characters are derived from religion and traditional culture. Now in the United States, once a most important Christian (majority in the general population) country has seen her Christian faith openly being attacked in every front, her 200-year traditions tied tightly to Christianity are eroded so quickly that we can say the good old traditions will fade away in one more generation.
Have you seen any diehard atheists (I. e., not only they don’t believe in God, they maliciously attack Christianity with lies and nonsense) who are dedicated to serving others, who honor the characters of honesty, kindness, and who honestly admit their insufficiency in personal integrity? I haven’t.
Kim: Indeed as you say it well. IMO there is a parallel with what is happening societally. Many of the people who are complaining about inequities are really beneficiaries of great American privileges.
It is not surprising that these colleges have planted the seeds for their own destruction. The Left is attempting to do the same thing for America. The good news is that self-education is booming. (Home Schooling, Audible, Master Class etc.) Apprenticeships are sure to follow. Michelangelo was an apprentice at 13 and chiseled the Pieta out of one block of marble at 23.
Thank you for your insight on the college transfer portal. I have a clearer understanding than yesterday. The transfer portal was my question of the day. "What is going on with football players entering the transfer portal?". I had no idea about Florida State. We tuned into the Montana Grizzlies vs. ND State Bison game! Double overtime win for the Grizzlies! They play SD State January 7th 2 p.m. Tuning in! Happy New Year!
Carolanne: Thank you. Of course I used FSU as an example, as there are other similar cases where key players opted out of the bowl game. Per your email request, I will send you my Newsletter.

Yes, their current arrangement is ridiculous.

Matt: "Difficult" is a polite understatement. I'd say unfathomable.
