In the book that is entitled "The Psychology of Totalitarianism," Professor of Clinical Psychology Mattias Desmet reveals that, in his scientific research, he has discovered that a "mass formation" of individuals who mistake "complex" for "non-complex" physical systems is a precursor to totalitarian rule. This misbelief leads these individuals to base public policies upon models of non-complex systems that provide a false and misleading picture of reality. Thus, amongst the critical thinking skills that should be imparted to a student of philosophy is to avoid this mistake. To make this mistake is to adopt a "mechanistic-materialistic world view," according to Prof. Desmet.
