The rules have changed, as in — there are none. By failing to recognize that, you cannot adapt to deal with it. Conventional means have no chance of breaching the envelope of intransigence around armies of unreachables in the trench warfare of our times. All of America is trying to plow through problems when you should be going around them (think asymmetrical "warfare").

“[W]e must accept responsibility for a problem before we can solve it.”

— M. Scott Peck, The Road Less Traveled

In a nation that incessantly blames and complains (seemingly for sport) — no one’s taking responsibility for anything. The ever-rising ocean of partisan pettiness is gluttony under the guise of concern. In reference to its opening image on Without Passion or Prejudice, I wrote: “Half the country is with me on this and I just lost the other half. Had I started with the image below, it would be the opposite half.” When you make up your mind on lickety-split perception alone — in what parallel universe does that qualify as critical thinking?

But in the force fields of fallacy that people hide behind today, you can claim to be a critical thinker and not do anything that remotely reflects its requirements. What was once understood as a demanding process that puts your mind to the test: Is now one Tweet away from glory in the Gutter Games of Government. In this fantasyland where liars are loved as bastions of virtue and people telling you what you wanna hear are “geniuses”: You can “win” an argument without even knowing what the issue’s about.

And the professionals answer to America suffocating in an atmosphere of absurdity? Endlessly rehashing the same old problems in the same old ways. It’s all an illusion of progress — perfectly captured by John Wooden’s “Never mistake activity for achievement.” But there’s an opportunity to turn it all around — by taking the problem and turning it into a solution. A student wrote of her psychology professor: “Tim Wilson taught me the importance of breaking problems down into more manageable pieces.” Lo and behold, at the bedrock of my idea is exactly that. If you want to start solving problems, first you need to clear the clutter that’s crippled this country. To do that, you don’t go after everything, you go after one thing that ties to everything. And you do it by holding one man to his own “standards”: A professional know-it-all with a cult-like following unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

As I’ve been in the trenches battling hermetically sealed minds for decades, that’s saying something. His disciples see him as some kind of saint-like Sherlock Holmes. And that — is an opportunity! How do we make people realize they’ve been lied to? You have to knock down one small pillar that’s easier to reach. I’ve got the perfect pillar — on the biggest and most costly lie in modern history (which shaped everything you see today). I don’t need mass appeal to make this happen, I just need to get to one man. Long before brain imaging to understand human behavior, we already had all the tools we needed for a hopeful humanity. We didn’t take advantage of the gifts we were given, and what a shocker — we don’t make good use of those fancy new insights either. Your field is forever fighting the forces of human nature whereas my solution banks on it.

I have a very specific target audience to get this in gear, so it wouldn’t take much. One email could set off a chain of events that could open the door to the kind of conversation this nation’s never had. Imagine! There was a time when we did.

To Readers: I asked Dr. Mead to respond to the several good comments here, as it was his article that readers are addressing. Regretfully, after thanking me for publishing his exerpt, he declined.

the idea here is that you are partly determined by your culture, and maybe to a lesser extent your race. there is no principled or rational basis for these beliefs

the quoted portion of mead's analysis of culture is largely true. other cultures do tend to be based on an unamerican belief in interdependence and fear of shunning or non-cooperation. it produces a kind of pacific exterior with weird, violent undercurrents in its shadows, lots of social pretense, an overemphasis on formality, and an easy acceptance of socialism

i would include asia in that, most of latin america, the middle east, and also europe to a slightly lesser extent

the question is what happens when people from those cultures come to america. what happens when they discover what they always knew, which is that they have a choice? i know immigrants from all over the world and i dont see predominantly unamerican attitudes in them. predominantly, i see american immigrants saying yes to america, to freedom of speech and gun ownership, and to other fundamental values of free people, especially the understanding that individuals always have a choice and are alone responsible for their choices

i'll give you one example. my wife is chinese. she has a cousin who lives in chinatown new york, and there is a shared chat group with him and his people who live in china. he's like the ted nugent of the chat group, outspoken and berating anyone who comes against american values. this is a guy who spent half his life in china, speaks english with a heavy accent, and lives in a chinese ghetto. you gonna judge him by those things that dont matter? or are you going to judge him by what's real?

i would suggest mead has it backwards. it isnt immigrants from non-individualist cultures that are the backward cultural elements in america, it's the ones who have long since been settled in america, and it's not because of race or culture

let's take white culture first, if there could be said to be such a thing. where is all this woke garbage about men calling themselves girls coming from? or the psychotic belief in giving children puberty blockers because of some thoughts the socialist school agenda has put in their heads? or all the climate hysteria and concern over equally psychotic concepts like 'sustainability' and 'the environment'? or invading college campuses to crusade for the most apartheid people in the history of the world who wont allow even a single jew to live among them: the arab-muslim colonizers of gaza? sorry, most of that insanity, and more, is coming from the christian white european culture mead is talking about as the most compatible with american values

my guess would be that immigrants from europe today would be most likely to perpetuate all the tranny tyranny, and the other woke and hysterical stuff that is pandemic today

then there's black culture. that's not an immigrant culture. black culture took a wrong turn around the time of the civil rights movement. there was a belief that is everything is the white man's fault and therefore it's fine to have single mom families, be obese, demand that others do your work for you and look the other way when you commit crimes, and if they wont then maybe you'll shoot your neighbors or have a community event of burning down your neighborhood

people who learned those cultures and have accepted their values do not have to do what their cultures tell them to do. they are all free to come to america at any time by coming to the truth

for the first time in my lifetime i am seeing many black people turn against the narratives they were taught that someone else is to blame for their problems and that they are owed something. they are saying to other black people, especially black men, to get off their shiftless, lazy asses and make the choices that allow you to take control of your life and take care of yourself and your family. they are turning their backs on the past and arriving on the real shores of america for the first time, and we should welcome them

being concerned about 'who' someone is before you invite them in is mental. you know when it's right to let someone in and when it's not, and a policy about culture or race is just a game you're playing in your head to make yourself feel better about being afraid of what will happen next. it's an attempt to get control of what you cannot control

i politely decline anyone's invitation to judge a man by his race, his culture, or his past. i'll judge him by the choices he makes right now. that is the american way, and it's all you need to know about who someone is

Dr. Franklin addressed this issue at the constitutional convention. He stated: "our constitution is intended for a moral religious people. It is wholly unsuited for any other." This nation has become ungovernable and is self destructing because of an invasion of cultural enemies. Freedom cannot survive in this environment. This is no accident. The one worlders are doing this all across the developed world. From the inevitable collapse they intend to force a modernized fuedal system of serfs and overlords.

Mr. Droz, I believe that you are halfway correct: a disastrous state, however, and one that can and -- I fear -- will do much damage. It is correct that white Europeans--a race that has recently co-evolved with Christianity (principally Catholicism) and Western philosophy--are being unfairly blamed for the collision that many other races and nations of peoples are experiencing with their with the European blend of inherent characteristics or biology, religion, culture and the history that derived from the complex combination thereof. There were undoubtedly errors and transgressions plenty enough to go around, including those for which Europeans are--like every other people--responsible for to greater and lesser degrees. Perhaps even by non-European forces and civilizational devices not natural to them, Europeans engaged in various ventures to make the world like itself and, thereby, descended at points to doomed and brutal modes of colonialism. I will defer to better historians to explicate those issues in vigorous and authentic, scholarly examinations should such honest activities again become possible. But, again, here, here to you in as much as you defend Europeans from the splash-and-slash attacks of historical and political defamation. Where your analysis goes astray, in my opinion, is in its failure -- and most likely deliberate refusal -- to consider the harsh reality that culture derives from the unique, neurobiological characteristics of a race of people. I suspect that you believe that this oversight is one of the beneficial possessions of your proposed worldview. The differences to which I am referring (I call it 'neuroculture', others have called it 'biolculture', extends down in lesser degrees between the various ethnicities within the European race as well and likewise for other racial subgroups. NOTE, very importantly, this position that I am presenting here is not a justification for an evaluative ranking of races. Indeed, I have repeatedly argued that each race has its own dignity and justification for living out their destiny as one of other races and ethnicities. To provide for the safety of each race and the potential of each to survive and develop as they see fi and employing -- largely -- their own spiritual, intellectual and physical resources and ingenuity -- I maintain my argument for bordered political boundaries---the true means of cultural dialogue, human interchange education and travel (and limited migration), and economic activity that promotes as well as protects the common and internal goods of the separate nations. This is the path to mutual international flourishing and real justice. A lot of economic theory, public policy and legal framework needs to be developed in this regard. But it would be far better that state actors, public intellectuals, foreign affairs commentators and political theorists devote their energies in the directions that I have outlined in a very sketch-like form, than to waste one more day with the failed crudity of behaviors they are exhibiting on many fronts, the NATO-Ukrainian mischief against Russia being only one example for which my own nation -- the United States -- seems to be engaged in and directed by utter lack of competence and with -- instead --many profoundly disordered values.

A melting pot only works if the contents are able to mix. Yeah, oil and water don't mix. Butter and flour do mix, but add egg yolks and lemon juice and you might have a very difficult time getting your Hollandaise onto your Eggs Benedict as one identifiable sauce. John's summary of "Burdens of Freedom" explains reasons why some immigrant populations might not mix.

My school in Pasadena, CA had about 10% black, 10% Mexican, and 10% Japanese students. There were no racial problems, until leftists brought them (three years after I graduated). The black kids were four generations removed from slavery. The Mexican kids' families had been in California since the 18th century. The Japanese kids were second or third generation immigrants. They all "got it."

How can assimilation work when 15% of the population grew up elsewhere, and another 15% are children of parents who grew up elsewhere?

This is why the Constitution requires a "native born" President. What does that mean? It doesn't mean simply "born within the geographical territory, or under control of, the United States." The only book cited in the Constitution is Emerich de Vattel's "The Law of Nations." Therein, he defines "native born citizen" as one both of whose parents were citizens at the time of birth. He argued that you learn citizenship and patriotism from your parents, not your land.

VS: There would be considerable more mixing if everything didn't come down to such matters as almost everyone is a victim, almost everyone needs reparations, etc.

Many NGO's like IOM and HIAS are leading disruptive immigrations of millions of people to western-word countries in Europe and North America. The original raison d'etre of these NGO's was noble, but their missions have become extremely dangerous to the fragile order of independently sovereign nations, especially in the last 4 or 5 decades. It has really gotten out of hand in North America during the last decade (except when Trump was in control). Countries like the US, Canada, Great Britain, France, and Germany have long been compassionate countries taking in other countries downtrodden, oppressed, malcontents, and misfits. BUT, it used to be controlled and limited by way of vetting to keep out the unwanted and unwelcome. The vetting used to help prevent the kind of diversity that all of these countries are now experiencing - destructive incompatibility of beliefs, customs, and cultures. The USA's "melting pot" concept was a great idea ............... while it lasted.

Russ: Yes. The problem is that these so-called compassionate people are using our money, resources, etc to be compassionate.

A scientific perspective on what's dividing us is presented by the clinical psychologist Mattias Desmet in the book that is entitled "The Psychology of Totalitarianism." This is that one group of people mistakes a "complex" physical system for a "non-complex" physical system, where a "complex" physical system is one that exhibits one or more "emergent properties," each of which is a property of the whole system and not of the separate parts of this system whereas a "non-complex" exhibits no such properties. Desmet's scientific research leads him to believe that the world view of the people who make this mistake is "mechanistic" and "materialistic. According to Desmet, this thinking is a product of the Enlightenment.

In my own scientific research I have discovered that the belief that mankind faces "Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming unless the world economy is decarbonized is a product of this thinking as is the support for collectivism, social justice and anti-Semitism.

The invaders (many are criminals) are the execution of the Cloward-Piven strategy driven by Soro and the UN. Combine this deliberate swamping of the US with Soros buying up DAs around the country who refuse to prosecute most crimes and who are emptying the prisons, and you have a recipe for cataclysm. Once the invaders fall off the welfare wagon and can no longer occupy hotels, they will be coming for our resources.

Sorry for that last comment John (I deleted it), you're on the right track and I applaud you for doing all you can. God is smiling on you. Let me swap that comment with this:

This war against the armies of old and evil will be the defining point of our existence - we were put here on this earth and at this time to face and confront these obstacles - and if we fail to fight these battles with truth, faith, and courage both ourselves and future generations will be condemned to a hellish existence where famine, pestilence, pain, and misery will reign supreme.

But that being said, please do not make the mistake of confusing the outcome of this all-encompassing conflict with the struggle to win it—it is the struggle itself that holds all of the meaning, and that is where your true personal victory lies. Nothing in your life has ever been about whether you win or lose, it has only ever been about how you conduct yourself the during these trials and tribulations.

It is what you do in the midst of this war when things are not in your favor that will define you: will you stand firm and embrace your integrity in the face of the impossible odds of a losing battle or will you renounce your honor and seek refuge against the raging storm? If God is watching which course of action would be favorable to Him? If you were watching from outside yourself which course would be favorable to you? To run and cower or to unflinchingly face the wickedness and fight it head on? As rolandttg put it:

---

"The solution could not be more simple. Everybody, man and woman, needs to collectively stand up for what's right and STOP backing down. My old boss was the finest man I ever knew, the kind you would follow up a hill knowing you wouldn't come back. He led by example, and had impeccable integrity, THE attribute that contains every other sub set of attributes worth having . He said "when you're right , you fight". He NEVER compromised when he was right.

Name one instance when the monsters doing this to us have compromised on anything. EVER? It's always the good guys that compromise. They advance their evil, and we fall back.. THAT, more than anything else, is how we got here. WE compromise our GOOD, THEY don't compromise their EVIL. Never again. Say it. We are right, so we will fight, and we won't compromise . Red Line drawn. We will never back down AGAIN" — rolandttg [modified]

---

And so we will fight and we will not back down and in doing so we will prove our worth and save mankind. We will never give another inch to the devil and his forces of evil because if the plandemic has taught us anything, it’s that when you deal with that loathsome lying viper you can only lose. And so we will rip its duplicitous venomous head off instead and stand firm with our integrity intact.

This is an excellent discourse John, thank you. I have argued for many years that the West doesn't understand the East, especially the inscrutable Chinese. I also argue that this is cultural but goes to the basis of our respective agricultural roots.

The West is a wheat-based culture that allows one man to harvest a crop on his own and thus engenders individuality and self-actualisation. One man and a horse can plough a field in a day (an acre in land measure). On the other hand, Asian agriculture is most often rice-based and requires a 'community' to act in unison to plant and harvest. Thus a community spirit is the culture.

The Western culture is competitive, with a dog-eat-dog approach, whereas in Asia, and here in Africa we have a cooperative approach to neighbours and life values. Check out UBUNTU in Africa for example. https://austrianpeter.substack.com/p/ubuntu-exit-uk-the-financial-jigsaw?utm_source=twitter&sd=pf

"The thing that hardly anyone has noticed, though anarchist literature has been aware of this for over 150 years, is that we need to restructure government from vertical to horizontal self-governing which is virtually incorruptible. Horizontal governance is by and for the people, requiring citizen participation, decentralized, women's liberation, bottom-up, ecological, no politicians, no lobbyists, feasible and fantastic.
