Dr. Droz,

This is a wonderfully written, clear, and complete description of K-12 educacation in America. Are your comments getting into the hands of those who are responsible for school curriculums? Thank you for mentioning the Hillsdale College K-12 curriculum they are providing charterd and other independent schools. My wife and I are giving Hillsdale College's program most of our estate for their K-12 program ass it seems to be the best investment for children. Thank you for keeping this issue alive and well documented.

Science education is just that, science education. It's not theology or the study of religion but the pursuit of truth and should be, at its core, non-sectarian. To include the possibility of a "god as the first cause" quickly begins the slide down a very slippery slope to an argument for "Intelligent Design", and we're back to the imposition of religion disguised as science education.

Judeo-Christianity is not a standard. It is a set of values, modes of behavior, thought, and philosophy established by two particular monotheistic religions. You'll find more Judeo-Christian behavior from atheists than from many who claim adherence to either religion. To denigrate atheism, suggesting that someone who holds no particular belief in a magic wizard in the sky who judges us and watches us as we live out our very short lives, doesn't advance this cause and the necessary critique of NGSS.

I'm an astrophysicist by training, a retired educator, an atheist, and a progressive who wants to see NGSS dismantled as much as you do, perhaps more so. I find such characterizations using religion and politics in this context offensive, unpalatable, and unbecoming of such a discussion. Our rejection of NGSS is and always should be apolitical and areligious.

Yes, those who promote NGSS do have an agenda, an agenda that has very little to do with progressive politics, democracy, or religion. It's always about up and down, never left or right or god or no god - that's the illusion -to divide the opposition. To confuse and obscure authentic science, critical thinking, and problem-solving is the point of NGSS. In doing so, they're dumbing down a whole generation of students who can't read a clock or don't know how to tie their own shoes. We're passing the torch of civilization on to these individuals with no critical thinking skills who can't think for themselves, easy marks to bamboozle into servitude while the very ground beneath their feet is stolen from them and our progeny.
