John, I've read your stuff for years and wholeheartedly agree with your criticisms.
But hoping to encourage a groundswell to bring sanity to public education is like hoping to persuade rapists to abstain. They can, so they will.
America lost "public" education nearly 200 years ago. The unwise decision to hand education over to govsernment guaranteed it would go the progressive route that has defined government since Horace Mann. The trajectory of both is identical ever since.
And because schools indoctrinate, we've lost that battle before it begins. Religion is barred to be "neutral" in the classroom. But as every devout Christian is aware, there is no neutrality. We are either with Him or against. A system established on the antithesis isn't about to let unhappy believers change the system that rewards them.
Abolish public schools. leave them to crash and burn. You're not going to persuade them to undo nearly two centuries of lies when it rewards them with control and a dumbed-down public that doesn't understands the underlying problem.
This is a wonderfully written, clear, and complete description of K-12 educacation in America. Are your comments getting into the hands of those who are responsible for school curriculums? Thank you for mentioning the Hillsdale College K-12 curriculum they are providing charterd and other independent schools. My wife and I are giving Hillsdale College's program most of our estate for their K-12 program ass it seems to be the best investment for children. Thank you for keeping this issue alive and well documented.
How many of John's readers remember the New Math disaster? That was designed to create "pure math" students who would know what a convergent bundle of matrix pencils is, without bothering to teach them arithmetic and algebra and …. Russel and Whitehead spent 200+ pages before getting to Peano's proof 1+1=2.
"The problem with the world is that intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence."
12 years of not teaching real science! Who will be qualified to be engineers, doctors, researchers… let alone who will be able to stand up to a government that lies with “science” and “statistics”? Perhaps that is the goal.
Now is more important than ever to home educate. All parents must find a way. All others must help them…and not with government $$.
Melanie: That is one options, but 99% of parents don't know real Science either — and would likely buy some NGSS app... We need to fix this in the US K-12 system.
With the NGSS failing to adequately support real learning and critical thinking. It needs to be called out for offering progressive ideology in its place.. Is it easier for many states to accept than to change the NGSS framework...which leads to producing non-thinking conformists?
Barbara: Like people, most states do not want to be seen to be out of sync with the rest. Once a few competent States drop the NGSS, you'll see a lot of others following suit.
“Certainly, they know more about K-12 Science education curricula than I do, right?”
Maybe they do, maybe not!
There are many, unchecked malignant cancer elements within our Federal, State and Local Govt. entities which has taken years to fully implement and permeate, viciously
in many ways, depending on which political party is in control at the time.
Unfortunately, many of the cancerous cells involved, are supposedly well educated (indoctrinated) PhD’s, who believe what they’re doing is right. Many as well haven’t any say in the matter and simply want to keep their job.
As we learned through lockdowns, many of the same people, were more than happy to teach students remotely. Unknowingly learning later on, many parents were appalled from what they saw.
Unfortunately, trying to rid and or remove these “parasitic” indoctrinating, more than happy to help, co-conspirators, is easier said than done.
When a Doctor or anyone who’s responsible for educating our children, happily goes along to get along, for fear of losing their job, a fine line between “Good Teacher’s vs Bad Teacher’s” becomes cloudy and difficult to purge.
Society as a
whole today, have been conditioned so well, ripe would be an understatement, a nasty battle ensues.
I do believe humanity is at a crossroad unlike any other time before. Technology combined with ideology coupled with lack of integrity and honesty are all mixed together.
Trying to sort the problem becomes much more difficult and in fact why we’ve even got to this stage.
I realized nearly 50 years later, what was never taught throughout public schools across America, was deliberately missing from the educational material. I’ve never been more confused today than I was before lockdowns. Fortunately, I persevered over the past four years researching, what didn’t make sense recently. What I learned was the education books we used for decades were missing certain topics and accurate information, deliberately. Simply because of the owner of the publishing companies ideological belief’s.
Quit eye opening and directly has affected millions of people my age. Today the 30-40 something year olds have opened up the eyes of many Americans, who like me, were deliberately blinded with missing information designed to indoctrinate us.
Today’s a little different because now our entire Federal, State and Local Govt.’s have “matured” you could say, with many people pushing certain political agendas without needing the publisher to dictate their agenda. Or they work hand in hand with the publisher to create the agenda they’re pushing.
Either way our society has reached critical mass regarding this issue and who’s going to stop this vs who’s going to push harder.
Quite an interesting topic of discussion. Education yes is extremely important. Indoctrination? Absolutely no room whatsoever for this!
I’m certain John, your summary points say it all. I’m not sure if, with such a high level of infiltration, anything can be done without completely dismantling the entire system?
This goes for all agencies throughout America, Federal, State and Local. Think about the past administration’s nonstop efforts, overstepping every constitutional requirement using bureaucratic, non elected people at all levels.
There’s been a huge amount of infiltration, influencing others it’s seems futile anything can be done to rectify this without a complete dismantling plan.
Something of this magnitude is monstrous. Our entire govt system needs complete overhaul. Years of corruption and incompetence coupled with bureaucratic agendas makes this a daunting and dangerous challenge.
Thank you John for sharing your experience and knowledge.

Mark: I understand your sentiment, but abandoning 50± million children is simply not an option. The solution is DOEd <https://criticallythinking.substack.com/p/fixing-the-us-education-system>>

The high school teach our published high-school textbook and the arson fires will stop.

AJR: TY for your commentary. Even though there is more liabilities, my four summary points at the end should say it all...

AJR: Yes, MAJOR changes need to be made to our K-12 education system. I've spelled them out in earlier commentaries.
